If you are doing use-case analysis for international projects, where language barriers kick in additionally to geographical and timezone gaps, do not rely on questionnaires. As a matter of fact, when you are dealing with people from disciplines other than yours, never rely on questionnaires. You may be as detailed as possible in your descriptions; You may go to extreme depths explaining each little question in there; But the people responding will understand something other than what you meant and provide useless replies.

It’s not necessarily user incompetence that messes things up, it’s usually the fact that you are speaking different languages (scientifically speaking, this time). Your terminology means nothing to them, and vice-versa. No matter how elaborate you may be, something will slip in there and give them the wrong impression.

There is really only one way to do it: Synchronously, in real time, by any means providing such possibilities (i.e. in-person or virtual meetings). Then you can guide the users and immediately realise if they are providing you with replies under the wrong assumptions.

Again, this holds for use-case analysis, not for demographic studies.
